Imagine being an artist, your passion and livelihood tied to your ability to create, only to have a devastating injury threaten to take it all away. That’s exactly what happened to Char Downs, a beloved artist in Paducah, Kentucky, known as Quilt City USA. But here’s where it gets inspiring: a unique solution emerged from an unexpected place—her community.
Char, the lead artist behind the Quilt City USA Murals, was in the midst of repainting intricate quilt designs on Paducah’s iconic flood wall when tragedy struck. A fall from a ladder in October left her with a broken hip, arm, and shoulder, confining her to a wheelchair. For someone whose art required reaching towering heights, this injury seemed like the end of her career.
“I used to climb a step ladder to reach the upper areas of the murals,” Char explained. “But after hip replacement surgery earlier this year, I thought I could manage. I was wrong. I ended up on the floor, injured all over again.”
And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just the physical pain that’s debilitating—it’s the loss of purpose and identity that comes with being unable to create. But Char’s husband, Jay Downs, refused to let her story end there. He approached their longtime neighbor and friend, Richard Glasscock, a woodworking enthusiast, with a bold idea: Could they build something to help Char paint again?
Glasscock, known for his craftsmanship, was immediately on board. “Jay’s idea was vague but brilliant,” he recalled. “He asked, ‘Can we create an easel that’s safe and supports her?’ My first thought was, ‘Absolutely.’ But then I learned it needed to be 9 feet wide. That’s when the real challenge began.”
What followed was a labor of love. Glasscock designed a custom easel tailored to Char’s needs. It was lightweight, on wheels for easy movement in her small studio, and most importantly, adjustable in four different settings. “I wanted her to have complete flexibility,” Glasscock explained. “She can raise, lower, or tilt it to any angle—even lay it flat like a table. It’s all about making it work for her.”
The easel also features a smooth, uninterrupted surface, ensuring Char’s brushstrokes remain flawless. “There’s nothing worse than hitting a bump and ruining your work,” Glasscock added. “This design eliminates that risk.”
But here’s where it gets controversial: while the device is a marvel of ingenuity, Char’s recovery isn’t complete. Her hand, still healing from the fall, won’t allow her to paint for another month. “I’m eager to start, but I’ll need help with mixing paints and opening jars,” she admitted. “Still, this easel gives me hope. I can wheel myself up to it and begin again when I’m ready.”
Glasscock, though proud of his creation, isn’t sure he’ll take on similar projects in the future. “My own shoulders are giving me trouble,” he confessed. “But helping Char was worth every moment. She’s special, and seeing her get back to her passion is all the reward I need.”
The mural Char will eventually paint on this easel is part of a larger initiative—the Quilt City USA Murals program. Six artists are working to transform Paducah’s flood wall into a gallery of significant quilt designs, celebrating the city’s rich textile heritage.
