If your health care plan includes Affordable Care Act subsidies, they’re set to expire at year’s end. That could push premiums higher for millions, including many in Florida.
Florida leads the nation in enrollment
In Florida, 4.7 million people are enrolled in ACA plans—the most of any state. Experts warn that many could face higher out-of-pocket costs next year.
Cat Jaramillo found ACA subsidies crucial to keeping her costs down. Her experience underscores how these credits can dramatically lower expenses.
“Insurance is why a procedure for a swollen hand cost so little—about $500 or less,” Jaramillo recalled.
Subsidies keep costs manageable
The subsidies also cover prescriptions for antidepressants and ADHD medications. Jaramillo, who is self-employed, benefits from ACA subsidies that reduce her monthly premiums.
She shared her bills, showing premiums ranging from about $125 to $188 per month.
Costs could jump without credits
Jaramillo attended a health fair to estimate potential costs if subsidies end at year’s end. Experts warn Florida could be most affected if ACA tax credits expire, with working‑class individuals bearing the brunt of higher premiums.
Few options if subsidies end
CBS News Miami spoke with Scott Darius, executive director of Florida Voices for Health, about what people can do. He emphasized there aren’t many alternative options if the tax credits aren’t extended, and advised people to prioritize what they need most from coverage.
“Make a list of priorities—what matters most in terms of coverage,” Darius said.
Jaramillo remains uncertain about next steps, hoping for federal relief. “If I can’t afford healthcare, everything else falls apart. I don’t know what I’ll do; it puts me into survival mode,” she said.
Enrollment deadline approaching
Darius noted a deadline: you must sign up for the ACA marketplace by Monday, or your coverage could be delayed at least until February.
