The 2026 World Baseball Classic is shaping up to be a thrilling tournament, especially for Japan's team, Samurai Japan. But here's the exciting part: the roster is expanding!
Seven pitchers have been added, including two MLB stars, Yusei Kikuchi and Yuki Matsui. Kikuchi, a left-handed pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, will make his WBC debut, while Matsui, a fellow southpaw from the San Diego Padres, adds to the team's depth. But the additions don't stop there! Five more pitchers from Japan's professional league, the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), have been named: Hiromi Ito, Kaima Taira, Atsuki Taneichi, Taisei Ota, and Daichi Ishii.
Now, the big question on everyone's mind: will superstar Shohei Ohtani, who dominated the 2023 Classic, be taking the mound again? Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hinted at a possible change in Ohtani's role, suggesting he might be used solely as a hitter. But, as Roberts himself admitted, Ohtani's incredible understanding of his body may lead to a different outcome.
Ohtani's performance in the 2023 tournament was legendary. He claimed MVP honors with a .435 batting average, a 1.345 OPS, and a 1.86 ERA on the mound, where he also secured the win in the final game against Team USA by striking out Mike Trout.
As the roster continues to evolve, baseball fans are in for a treat. And this is where it gets controversial: should Ohtani focus solely on hitting, or will his pitching prowess be too tempting to ignore? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
