Scheduled for launch at 6:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday, February 11, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Crew-12 will be the first mission to benefit from this policy change. The crew, including NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA’s Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, will spend nine months aboard the International Space Station. And this is the part most people miss: This change also applies to the highly anticipated Artemis 2 mission, launching in March, which will send four astronauts on a historic 10-day trip around the moon—the first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years.
Until now, astronauts have relied on older technology, like a 2016 Nikon DSLR, to capture images in space. The new policy challenges long-standing protocols about what technology is deemed safe for space travel. "This is a small step in the right direction," Isaacman noted, emphasizing the importance of modern tools in advancing space exploration.
The Crew-12 mission was expedited to address staffing shortages at the ISS after the Crew-11 team was medically evacuated in January. After weather delays, the launch is now set for 5:38 a.m. ET on Thursday, February 12, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which partners with SpaceX to transport astronauts and cargo to orbit, allowing NASA to focus on ambitious projects like the Artemis lunar program and future Mars missions.
