In a thrilling showdown, Keyonte George shined brightly, scoring an impressive 31 points and sinking the game-winning floater with just 2.1 seconds left on the clock, helping the Utah Jazz secure a narrow 131-129 victory over the Detroit Pistons. This marked the end of the Jazz's frustrating four-game losing streak, a much-needed boost for the team.
Cade Cunningham, who delivered an outstanding performance with 29 points and 17 assists, had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but missed a contested shot. Following the close call, he engaged in a lengthy discussion with the officials before heading off the court. In a remarkable first half, Cunningham notched a career-high 13 assists.
The game also saw Lauri Markkanen contribute significantly with 30 points, while Brice Sensabaugh matched his season-best of 20 points, stepping up admirably in place of Ace Bailey, who was sidelined due to a hip injury.
For the Pistons, Tobias Harris added 16 points, yet despite shooting an impressive 52.2% from the field and making 18 out of 37 three-point attempts, they suffered only their second loss in the last nine games.
A pivotal moment occurred when George intercepted a pass in the backcourt and made a breathtaking breakaway dunk, giving the Jazz a 129-125 lead with just over a minute remaining. However, Caris LeVert blocked George's subsequent effort, allowing Cunningham to steal the ball and sink two free throws to tie the game at 129-129.
Utah enjoyed its largest advantage at 104-89 with 2:34 remaining in the third quarter, following Kevin Love's three successful free throws. Love contributed 11 points during that quarter as the Jazz outscored the typically robust Pistons 44-35.
Although Detroit fought back valiantly in the fourth quarter, they struggled to contain George during the critical moments of the game.
Interestingly, the Pistons, currently leading the Eastern Conference and boasting the second-best defensive rating in the league (just behind Oklahoma City), found it challenging to keep pace with Markkanen and George, especially as the two players navigated through numerous screens.
Despite allowing an average of 134.4 points over their last five games, the Jazz made key defensive plays down the stretch, including a block and three steals, ultimately sealing their victory.
Looking ahead, the Pistons will face the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday as they continue their nine-day road trip, while the Jazz will travel to San Antonio for their next match on Saturday.
