Remembering Ronald 'Ron' Larder (1956-2025): A Life of Service, Passion, and Adventure (2026)

We are deeply saddened to share the news of Ronald 'Ron' William Larder's passing on December 4, 2025. Born on November 30, 1956, in New Ross, Nova Scotia, Ron was a beloved brother and a pillar of strength for his family. He was one of ten siblings, including the late Clarence Patrick Larder Sr. and Mary O’Neta 'Neta' (Cooke) Larder. Ron's early life was filled with laughter and adventure, as he earned the affectionate nickname 'Housefly' from his family. This playful moniker stuck with him throughout his childhood, and he often sought indoor activities during the summer, much to the amusement of his siblings.

As a young adult, Ron pursued his education at New Ross Consolidated School, Nova Scotia Community College, and later through courses at St. Mary’s and Dalhousie Universities. His dedication to public service was evident in his 30-year career with the Province of Nova Scotia. He began as a Program Administration Officer, serving for 28 years, and then transitioned to an Income Assistance Caseworker for two years. For his unwavering commitment, Ron received a prestigious 30-year service award. During his working years, he resided in Kentville, Nova Scotia, and later moved to LaHave and Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, after retirement.

Basketball was a significant part of Ron's early life, and he cherished playing with his brothers and friends. In 1974, the New Ross team, led by Ron, won the New Year’s Classic. Beyond basketball, Ron had a diverse range of interests, including coin collecting, music appreciation (he had a vast vinyl collection), camping, hiking, fly fishing, photography, geology, and gold panning. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Raw Earth Explorations in 1993, making him the only prospector in the Larder family. He was often seen wearing his signature Tilley hat, a symbol of his adventurous spirit.

Ron was also renowned for his culinary skills, particularly his seafood chowder, which he prepared for family gatherings and annual house parties during the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom festivities. These events were a highlight for his loved ones, who cherished the opportunity to gather and celebrate with him. Ron found solace in nature, especially the South Shore beaches, particularly Rissers, and the trails in Bridgewater. His gentle and soft-spoken nature made him a delightful companion, always eager to chat with new people he met on his travels.

Ron is survived by nine siblings: Clarence Patrick 'CP' (Jane), Dr. Thomas 'Tom' (retired) (Heather), Brenda (Jim), Derek, Cst. Ret’d (Sharon), Wanda (Sheldon), Twyla (Brian), Joseph 'Joe' (Donna), and Rosco (Det//Sgt. Ret’d (Qui)), Todd (Shirley). He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Patrick Larder Sr. and Mary O’Neta 'Neta' (Cooke) Larder, as well as his sister Gwendlyn Janet Larder and niece Tina Larder. A celebration of Ron's life will be held in New Ross in the Spring/Summer of 2026, with the exact date and location to be announced. Memorial donations in Ron's memory can be made to Diabetes Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the care of the R.A. Corkum Funeral Home in Wileville. Online condolences can be expressed by visiting www.corkumfuneralhome.ca.
