In a significant move that has caught the attention of baseball fans, right-handed pitcher Spencer Howard is set to join Japan's Yomiuri Giants, as reported by various sources.
Spencer Howard’s Journey in Major League Baseball
At 29 years old, Howard was once hailed as a promising talent during his time with the Philadelphia Phillies. However, despite his noteworthy achievements in the minor leagues, he struggled to maintain that same level of success in the big leagues. Over the course of five seasons in Major League Baseball—spanning four different teams—he recorded an ERA of 7.00, along with 136 strikeouts over 144 innings pitched. Although some of his advanced statistics hinted at potential, his performance faltered even further in Triple-A, where he posted a staggering 7.07 ERA and a Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) of 6.20 in 70 innings from 2022 to 2024. This disappointing trajectory ultimately led him to seek opportunities in Asia.
In 2025, Howard signed with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, where he showcased his skills effectively when not hindered by injuries. Unfortunately, a series of minor injuries limited him to just 48 ⅔ innings across nine starts that season. Despite this, he achieved a strong record of 5 wins and 1 loss, posting an impressive adjusted ERA of 1.28. During his time on the mound, he managed to strike out 18% of batters while maintaining a low walk rate of 6%. Howard's fastball averaged 91.6 mph, complemented by a slider that served as his main secondary pitch against right-handed hitters. Additionally, he relied on a changeup, which proved to be his most effective weapon when facing left-handed batters.
Now, Howard is making his way to the Tokyo-based Yomiuri Giants, a team actively working to solidify its starting rotation after experiencing the departure of key pitchers Tomoyuki Sugano and Foster Griffin in consecutive off-seasons. With new additions like Forrest Whitley and Bryan Mata joining the roster this offseason, Howard is expected to take on a role as a back-end starter. This position should ease the burden of heavy innings, a contrast to his previous experience with Rakuten, where he faced the necessity of a larger workload.
